Hey Starter Librarian--
I'm a member of two of those groups, so I just wanted to point out that there are student memberships for both SLA and ASIST that are quite affordable, and being a member qualifies you to apply for their travel scholarships for the annual conferences. Personally, I think ASIST has better publications and more interesting membership, especially with your background as a software engineer. I think you will find that you can run pretzels around most of SLA as far as your tech skills go, and that you will find a lot of their publications sound like other people playing "catch up" to you. However, the annual conference is great for networking if you can go on a scholarship.
Good luck!
